Before the Antietam Campaign:
A merchant in Richmond before the War, he was appointed Lirutenant in the Hampden Artillery in 1862, promoted to Captain 21 April 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He continued to lead his battery in action from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg. He was appointed to Moseley's Artillery Battalion as Major, ranking from 9 April 1864, and served until War's end.

After the War:
He was an actor and painter, and later cartoonist for the Austin Texas Siftings magazine after 1881. HIs wife was the former Mary Augusta Ambler, reportedly grand-niece of Thomas Jefferson.
