Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted at age 22 in New York City, and mustered in as Corporal, Company C, 59th New York Infantry on 20 August 1861. He was promoted Sergeant on 1 July 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He was wounded again in action on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He was promoted to First Sergeant in July 1863. He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps in February 1864, as Friedrich Kloeber. After the War: In the 1889 directory of the Association of Survivors of the Regiment, his address was listed as Company E, 15th US Infantry.
