Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 25 in Boston, and mustered in as Private, Company F, 59th New York Infantry on 20 September 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 November, and to Sergeant on 1 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.
