Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 41 on 20 June 1861 in Lowville, and mustered in as Private, Company B, 59th New York Infantry on 9 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for disability on 4 December 1862. He enlisted 3 June 1863 at Montague in the 20th New York Cavalry; and mustered in as Private, Company A, on 3 September 1863. He mustered out with the Company on 31 July 1865 near Manchester, VA.

After the War:
In the 1889 directory of the Association of Survivors of the Regiment, he was listed as Rev. A. Marcellus, Oakland, Oregon.
