Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted and gave his age as 33 on 10 December 1861 in Garrison, and mustered in as Private, Company I, 59th New York Infantry on 2 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was probably buried first on the battlefield and then reinterred in New York in December 1862.
