Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was 19 when he enlisted in Company K, 59th New York Infantry on 15 August 1861. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded, in action on 13 December 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA, and left at the General Hospital there. He was dropped from the Company rolls in June 1863.
