Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted at age 23 on 5 November 1861 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company K, 59th New York Infantry on 22 November. In the Antietam Campaign: He was captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam. The remainder of the War: He was paroled (date unknown), and transferred to Company A on 25 June 1863.
