Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted in Rochester at age 21 and mustered in as Private, Company F, 108th New York Infantry on 31 July 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was promoted to Corporal on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He was promoted to Sergeant on 28 February 1863, and slightly wounded at Gettysburg in July.
