Before the Antietam Campaign:
He practiced medicine in East Avon and Lima, NY, and moved to Rochester in 1850. Enrolled at age 49 and mustered as Surgeon, 108th New York Infantry on 18 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was with the Regiment on the battlefield at Antietam and treated wounded soldiers there on 17 September 1862 and after.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged 6 January 1863: he resigned on account of illness.
