Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a newspaper typesetter and militia member before the War in Rochester. He mustered into service as First Sergeant of Company H, 108th New York Infantry on 7 August 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in February 1863. Killed in action 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.
