Before Sharpsburg

A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he had also studied medicine at the Universities of Virginia and Pennsylvania (class of 1852). He had practiced at a hospital in Philadelphia, and farmed in Virginia before the War. He entered the ANV in Spring 1861 as Captain of the battery.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the foot while in command of the Battery at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major of Artillery on 12 December 1862, Lieutenant Colonel on 2 March 1863, and Colonel on 27 February 1864. At Gettysburg, he commanded the Artillery Battalion in Rodes' Division, and was Chief of Artillery to Jubal Early by 1864. He served in the Richmond defenses, until the surrender in the spring of 1865, as Chief of Artillery of the 2nd Corps.

After the War

Following the War (to 1873) he operated the family farm in King William Coounty, and ran a school there. He was later railroad commissioner of Virginia and proctor of the University of Virginia.

His father (Thomas Nelson Carter) was a first cousin of General R. E. Lee's.
