Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was Captain of the Randolph Volunteers, becoming Company E, 13th Georgia Infantry, as of 19 June 1861. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel to date from 8 July 1861. He was elected Colonel on 1 February 1862 on the death of Colonel Ector. He led the Regiment at the battles of Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill.1

In the Antietam Campaign:
Col Douglass was killed in action just south of the Cornfield early in the morning of September 17th, while in command of the Brigade.
