Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Tarboro, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in Company A (Capt. JL Bridgers) of the Bethel (original First) Regiment, NCST as it organized in April 1861 for six-month service. After Bethel, on 7 September 1861, he was promoted to Captain of the Company. The regiment mustered out of service on 12 November.

In the Antietam Campaign:
By Sharpsburg he commanded the first iteration of Company G of the 40th Regiment (3rd Artillery) - a battery of light artillery. His was the only Company of the regiment to fight outside of North Carolina. Colonel Manning's report notes that Lloyd's battery lost a 6-pounder and two caissons on the Campaign.

The remainder of the War:
The battery was dissolved and it's men assigned to Manly's and Reilly's Batteries in October 1862. Lloyd was therafter commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the Senior (NC) Reserves, but resigned immediately and returned home.

After the War:
ì[17 Nov 1871] The lodge [Concord Lodge, no. 58, ancient, free and accepted Masons, Tarboro, North Carolina] repaired to the residence of our deceased brother and escorted the body to the grave where it was interred with the proper Masonic honors.î
