Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was the first commander of the Louisiana Guard battery, formed from Company B, 1st Louisiana Infantry, late in 1861. He and his battery saw action at Second Manassas and Cedar Mountain1 before the Maryland Campaign.

The remainder of the War:
He was killed while in command of the battery in action near Fredericksburg, Virginia, in December 1862.2
