Before the Antietam Campaign:
Service in Royal Artillery from 1852 - 56, in Crimean War (1854). He came to the US in 1857. He was in Company K.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He captured two men of the 14th North Carolina Infantry at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted Sergeant at Fredericksburg in December 1862. WIA at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863 in left hip and blinded in one eye by "a powder burn from a gun in the hands of a comrade who shot over my shoulder." Discharged 23 August 1863.
