Before the Antietam Campaign:
The son of former Governor William H. Cabell, he had graduated from the Vrginia Military Instiute, and was a practicing lawyer in Richmond before the War.

'Organised initially as the "Richmond Light Artillery" on May 3, 1821, this company was later renamed in July, 1824 to the "Richmond Fayette Artillery" in honor of the Marquis de La Fayette's visit to the United States. Early captains included Robert Nimmo, Charles Richardson, and Henry C. Cabell, under whom the battery was organized for the war on April 25, 1861.'

'Of the 1st Virginia Artillery: The 1st Virginia Artillery regiment was formed from 10 independant Artillery Companies in September of 1861. Major George Wythe Randolph, of the Richmond Howitzers, was Appointed Colonel commanding the Regiment. Captain Henry Coalter Cabell, Richmond Fayette Artillery, was appointed Lieutenant Colonel. Captain J. Thompson Brown, 2nd Company Richmond Howitzers, was appointed as Major.'

He was promoted to Colonel (when?).

In the Antietam Campaign:
Gen McLaws, in his official report, said: "Col. Henry Coalter Cabell, chief of artillery, who had been absent, sick, joined me on the field [Sharpsburg], and remained during the rest of the engagement." He relieved Maj. S. P. Hamilton, who had been acting Chief of Artillery to Gen McLaws for the earlier part of the Maryland Campaign.

The remainder of the War:
He continued in command of Gen McLaws' Artillery battalion at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness.
