In 1861 he was Captain of a unit originally organized as Co. A, 1st Regiment Georgia Regular Infantry - reorganized as "Hamilton's" artillery battery by order of the War Department on 24 July 1861. The battery was disbanded by S.O. #163 15 July 1862.
