Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was of a prominent Georgia family, his grandfather a Governor (1802 - 06), US Senator, founder of the U of Ga., and namesake of Milledgeville, Ga.

He was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company C, 1st Regiment Georgia Regulars February 1, 1861. Resigned, having been elected Captain of Milledge's Battery Georgia Light Artillery May 21, 1862, on the resignation of Captain Blodgett.

The remainder of the War:
He served for the whole War in command of the battery, lastly under General Early in the Valley (Va) District into 1865.
