Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at Rochester at age 40 and mustered in as Corporal, Company C, 108th New York Infantry on 28 July 1862. He was promoted Sergeant on 15 September 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to First Sergeant 1 March 1863. Captured 25 August 1864 at Ream's Station, VA. Died a prisoner on 27 February 1865 in Richmond, VA.
