Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted at age 24 on 16 July 1862 in Rochester, and mustered in as Sergeant, Company F, 108th New York Infantry on 21 July. In the Antietam Campaign: He carried the colors and was mortally wounded - shot in the forehead - in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
