Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a private in the 1st South Carolina Infantry in early 1861, then Captain in the 4th South Carolina. That unit became Company B of the Palmetto Sharpshooters in the Spring of 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was later Major, then Colonel, and was killed in action on 28 October 1863 at Wauhatchie, Tennessee.
