He was the son of a New Market, Virginia physician. It has been stated that he was 'severely wounded" in 1861 [where? when?], and that he lost a leg during the war [where? when?],

In the Antietam Campaign:
His battery was stationed on the Potomac at one of the Fords near WIlliamsport, defending the ANV escape route, but was not engaged.

The remainder of the War:
On 26 September 1862, his battery was combined with Wooding's Danville Artillery.

After the War:
He was living in New Market, and built a house there at 9329 N. Congress Street in 1877 (Source: Town of New Market (VA) web tour page, gone 5/2004).
