Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was appointed Lieutenant in Captain Cutts' Sumter Flying Artillery battery (later Ross's) 15 July 1861, and Captain (on Cutts' promotion) 23 May 1862.1

The remainder of the War:
Also commanded the battery at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, to Petersburg as late as August 18642. Was promoted to Major of Artillery 1 March 1865.1
