Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Painesville, he gave his age as 24 when he enlisted as First Sergeant, Company I, 23rd Ohio Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 13 June. He was promoted again, to 2nd Lieutenant, Company B, on 7 September 1861.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted First Lieutenant, Company B on 7 October 1862 and appointed Regimental Quartermaster on 1 June 1863. He was promoted to Captain of Company E on 1 July 1864, and resigned on 30 November 1864.

After the War:
He was Mayor of Willoghby, OH 1872 - 1877, 1878 - 1888. He hosted and presided at a reunion of the Regiment there on 17 September 1878 which was attended also by President R.B. Hayes. Ellen was an unsuccesful Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives (20th District) in 1892.

Service data from the Roster1. His wartime journal is in the collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Thanks to Dan Vermilya for posting about him. Ellen married Emma H. Carroll (1838-1920) in March 1863 in Lake County, OH - perhaps on a furlough?
