Before the Antietam Campaign: As early as 1848 he operated a tin shop, Hupp's Phoenix Tin Establishment, manufacturing metal ware, in Salem, Virginia. He bought and donated to the town it's first fire pumper in that year, after a fire severely damaged his shop. He organized the Salem Flying Artillery after John Brown's attack on Harper's Ferry (1859). The remainder of the War: In October 1862 Hupp returned home, too ill to command, and later died of cancer.
