Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Bridgeport, CT, he was the original commander of the 14th Connecticut Infantry as it was organized in August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was the senior Colonel and Brigade commander, all the Regiments being green troops. They were part of the Federal assault on the Confederate positions in the Sunken Road and Roulette Farm midday on September 17th.

The remainder of the War:
He was honorably discharged for disability 14 August 1863.
