Before the Antietam Campaign: After graduating from West Point, he was appointed 2nd Lt, 1st US Infantry, 1 July 1827; Served as Assistant Quartermaster 11 July 1832 to 31 Dec 1835 (his CO was Col. Zachary Taylor); Promoted to 1st Lt 4 Mar 1833; Resigned 30 Nov 1836; Appointed Colonel, 1st Michigan Volunteers, 9 Dec 1847 (service in Mexico); Honorably mustered out 9 Jul 1848; Appointed Colonel, 16th Michigan Infantry, 8 Sept 1861; Resigned 18 May 1863. He was a signer/witness of a treaty with the Chippewa tribe in 1837, and appears to have been Mayor of Michigan City, IN in 1839. After the War: He and his wife were prominent in Flint, MI after the Civil War.
