Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an engineer and living in Fairfax County before the War. He enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant, Company B, 17th Virginia Infantry in 1861, and was elected Captain in April 1862. Wounded at Seven Pines.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.
