Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company C, 18th Georgia Infantry in February 1862, and had been wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia June 27, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg, and captured on 19 October 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Foot amputated sometime in 1862. Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia November 10, 1862.
