Enlisted as 1st Sergeant, Company D in May 1861. Elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant January 1862; 2nd Lieutenant July 16, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Elected 1st Lieutenant April 1863; Captain February 7, 1865. Captured at Harper's Farm, Virginia April 6, 1865. Released at Johnson's Island, Ohio June 18, 1865.
