He had enlisted as Sergeant, and was 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 18th Georgia Infantry by September 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded in left arm, necessitating amputation above elbow, and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 2, 1863. Paroled at Johnson's Island, Ohio March 14, 1865. Exchanged at James River, Virginia March 22, 1865.
