Before the Antietam Campaign:
He served in Company E, 36th Georgia Infantry for a year from March 1861, and then enlisted in Company K. 18th Georgia Infantry in April 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pines, Virginia June 1, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 18 September 1862.
