Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was elected Lt. Colonel of the Regiment on August 15, 1862, and subsequently commissioned by the Governor.

In the Antietam Campaign:
The Regiment advanced through East Woods and into the Cornfield at about 6:45 am, and Lt. Colonel Hammersly was severely wounded almost immediately.

The remainder of the War:
His arm had been "terribly torn and mutilated", and he was unable to resume command. He resigned his commission in January 1863.
