He enlisted in Company E, 6h Georgia Infantry on 28 July 1861. he was appointed Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September, and captured on 17 September 1862 at or near Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds in White House Hospital near Sharpsburg, MD on 30 September 1862.

Thanks to descendant Rudy Rowell for service details, from his service record, and for his middle name. John's brother William R. Rowell, also in Company E, was killed at Sharpsburg on 17 September. A third brother James Washington Rowell also served in Company E (1861-65), and may have been at Sharpsburg.
