Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was born about 1838-1842 and was a farmer when e enlisted 0n 30 April 1861 at Culpeper Courthouse in Company C, 7th Virginia Infantry. He joined the regimantal band in 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 on South Mountain.

The remainder of the War:
He was a prisoner at Ft. McHenry and Fortress Monroe, and rejoined his unit in November or December 1862. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the US on 15 May 1865 in Richmond.
