Before the Antietam Campaign:
Described as a farmer, 5'7", with dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair. when he enlisted 1 May 1861 at Woodville in Company G, 7th Virginia Infantry. Reported absent without leave 6 April 1862 until summer 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Exchanged 10 November 1862. In guardhouse May/June 1863. Captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, in prison at Ft. Delaware, and exchanged 31 July. Deserted in January 1864 and captured by US Cavalry. Imprisoned at the Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. Took Oath of Allegiance to US and sent to New York 0n 14 March 1864.
