Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was 5'7 1/2", with dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair when he enlisted on 13 May 1861 at Giles Courthouse in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
On detached service collecting conscripts and deserters, Autumn 1863. Captured at Five Forks, 1 April 1865 and held at Pt. Lookout. Took Oath of Allegiance to US 10 June 1865.
