Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted 13 May 1861 at Giles Courthouse in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry. Captured at Frayser's Farm, 6/30/62 and held at Ft. Columbus, Ft. Delaware. Exchanged 8/5/62. Wounded at 2nd Manassas, 8/30/62.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded at Drewry's Bluff, 5/16/64. Captured at Five Forks, 4/1/65, kept at Pt. Lookout. Took Oath of Allegiance to US 6/12/65.
