He was a mechanic, and enlisted 23 April 1861 at Madison Courthouse in Company A, 7th Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action, probably in September 1862 in Maryland.

The remainder of the War:
He was paroled 30 September 1862. Captured at Five Forks, 4/1/65 and held at Pt. Lookout. Took Oath of Allegiance to US 6/12/65.
