Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted on 13 May 1861 in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry at Giles Courthouse. Promoted to Sergeant (date unknown).

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was at Ft. McHenry, MD and exhchanged soon after capture. Court-martialed 2/20/65 and found guilty of encouraging insubordination and mutiny; sent to Castle Thunder, Richmond, with sentence of 2 years' hard labor. Was released and returned to duty 3/29/65. No further record.
