A farmer, he enlisted in Company I, 7th Virginia Infantry on 3 June 1861 at White Hall, VA.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action in September 1862 in Maryland.

The remainder of the War:
He wa a prisoner at Ft. Delaware until exchanged 10 November 1862. He on the 15th of that month at Camp Winder.
