Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company C, 7th Virginia Infantry on 10 March 1862 in Orange County. Wounded in action at Seven Pines, 5/31/62.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action in September 1862 in Maryland, and may also have been wounded.

The remainder of the War:
He was at Ft. McHenry, MD and exchanged on 17 October 1862. A Federal account says he "entered into our lines" and was captured, probably in 1864, and imprisoned at Elmira, NY. He was exchanged 29 October 1864. Confederate records say he was court-martialed and sentenced to forfeit 2 months and 16 days' pay in July or August 1864. He was captured again in action at Sayler's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865, and held at Pt. Lookout, MD. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the US on 22 June 1865.
