Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 June 1861 at Giles Courthouse as Sergeant. Wounded in action at 1st Manassas on 21 July 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant on 26 April 1862 and Captain on 30 June.

The remainder of the War:
Last official entry says he returned to duty from hospital 2 April 1865.
