Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was 5' 6", with light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair when he enlisted in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 June 1861 at Giles Courthouse.He was wounded at Williamsburg, VA on 6 May 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Arrested 15 June 1863. Served briefly with brigade commissary. Wounded at Five Forks in the neck on 1 April 1865. Paroled 12 June at Charleston, WV.
