He was 6' with dark complexion, black eyes, and light hair when he enlisted as Corporal in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861 at Giles Courthouse. Wounded at Blackburn's Ford on 18 July 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on 14 February 1862 and wounded at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862.

The rest of the War

Deserted 11 May 1863 and joined the Confederate army in southwestern Virginia. Paroled 22 June 1865 at Charleston, WV.
