Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861 at Giles Courthouse.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA in left arm on 3 July 1863 and captured. Imprisoned at College Hospital, Gettysburg and in Baltimore. Paroled at Appomattox.
