Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1863 at Giles Courthouse. Detached service as nurse, 15 August 1861 to Spring 1963.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present with his Company at South Mountain.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded at Gettysburg in the left thigh on 3 July 1863 and captured. Held at Letterman General Hospital, Chester Gen. Hospital, Pt. Lookout, and General Hospital - West's Buildings. His leg was amputated. Exchanged and sent to Chimborazo Hospital about 18 Novemeber 1863. Unofficial source says he was subsequently discharged.
