Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company D, 7th Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861 at Giles Courhouse. Promoted to Sgt on 28 April 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Apparently absent without leave some time after October 1864. Courtmartialed in February 1865 and sentenced to a term in Castle Thunder for "encouraging insubordination and mutiny." Imprisoned at Libby Prison 4/10/65; sent to Parkersburg, WV 4/21/65.
