Before Sharpsburg

From Beaufort, he enrolled as a 3rd Lieutenant, Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 16 May 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 25 May 1862 and to First Lieutenant on 1 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 - his "knee pan shot off".

The rest of the War

He resigned due to the effects of his wound on 1 June 1863, then only able to get around on crutches.
