Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old farmer in Wayne County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861 at Fort Macon, NC.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the right arm in action on 17 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

His arm was amputated, and he was briefly at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD - 15-16 October, then sent on to Fort McHenry in Baltimore. He was paroled there on 19 October and exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 22 October 1862. He was discharged for wounds on 6 November 1862.
